About this place
A café meal might bring Neapolitan spaghetti or pizza toast to mind, but Sakamoto’s menu has a more unusual choice: mafe, a chicken curry made with peanut paste. The paste lends deep richness, balanced by a thoughtful blend of spices; the result is savoury and full-flavoured, rather than simply hot. Generous pieces of chicken make it a satisfying option for lunch when you want a proper meal.
Mafe is not the only curry on offer: there are also pork, keema and bean curries. For something more familiar, the classic Neapolitan spaghetti arrives on a silver plate, its gently tangy ketchup sauce fried until fragrant. Toasts topped with tuna or cheese, as well as pizza toast, make for an easy light meal, while toast with red bean paste or jam is another tempting choice for a smaller bite.
Homemade sweets pair naturally with coffee after a meal or during an afternoon tea break. The moist baked cheesecake goes particularly well with a full-bodied coffee blend, including one based on Colombian beans. For a fresher finish, there is a chilled rare cheesecake made with yoghurt, as well as coffee jelly, where gentle bitterness meets sweet milk. The drinks extend beyond coffee to homemade ginger ale, Dong Ding oolong tea and herbal tea.
Jazz plays in a room furnished with counter and table seating, with a relaxed atmosphere that makes it easy to settle in alone. Whether you’re after a filling lunch or a quiet afternoon with a book or a moment of rest, the café leaves you free to take your time.
